Alarmed at movements sweeping the country to defund the police, Billy Taylor, CEO of Hometown Lenders—Alabama’s largest independent mortgage lender—has launched a night of appreciation for law enforcement called Back the Blue. Attendance is free for local, state, and federal members of our law enforcement community, and each officer is also welcome to bring one guest. This event will honor our hardworking police officers and the sacrifices they make to keep our communities safe and secure.

As Taylor recently said, “It is time for our country to support our police departments, not work to defund them. Members of the law enforcement are on the front lines, and these brave men and women deserve to be defended.”

Unfortunately, many politicians are supporting the insanity behind the “defund the police” movement. In Los Angeles, instead of providing local law enforcement with a planned budget increase, Mayor Eric Garcetti reversed course and the City Council voted to slash the LAPD budget by $150 million—thereby significantly reducing the number of police officers on the street. Concurrently, homicide deaths in Los Angeles rose dramatically in 2020.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio has gone even further by gutting the NYPD budget by $1 billion and disbanding the NYPD anti-crime unit of plainclothes officers. Since then, the city has seen a significant percent spike in homicides and witnessed hundreds of shootings.

Back the Blue seeks to honor local law enforcement for their work protecting our citizens. Dismantling or abolishing law enforcement is not the answer.  Let’s support, pray for, and defend the brave police officers that keep our children and families safe.
